AMI/USA Consultation Committee Mission

To convey and uphold authentic Montessori principles and practices in AMI schools in the United States. 

Introduction

The Consultation Committee is a standing committee of AMI/USA that serves as an advisory committee for pedagogical input and support of the AMI Recognition Program in the USA. Suggestions and recommendations for new members can come from the sitting members of the committee, current active AMI/USA School Consultants and the Executive Director of AMI/USA. The decision to select a new committee member will be by consensus of the Consultation Committee and approved by the Executive Director of AMI/USA. AMI/USA wishes to expand its current expertise and is inviting applications from candidates from primary, elementary and adolescent levels.

Consultation Committee Member Profile

The Consultation Committee member must be convinced of the pivotal role AMI can play in enhancing the potential of a human being. While promoting the overall mission and vision of the AMI/USA Consultation Committee, this position requires a deep commitment to AMI’s objectives, which are:

  • Upholding the rights of the child in society and making known the child’s importance for the progress of civilization. 

  • Making known the natural laws of growth to help the child to develop naturally in the family, school and society. 

  • Spreading and upholding the pedagogical principles and practice formulated by Dr Maria Montessori, which ensure the independence of the child’s personality through successive stages of growth until he reaches full normal development by means of his own activity. 

  • Providing opportunities wherever possible for children to develop normally, thereby helping all adults to enter a new life of harmony and co-operation with children; and by thus unifying the two fundamental phases of human life, to lead the way to a higher and more peaceable civilization. 

  • Functioning as a social movement that will strive to obtain recognition for the rights of the child throughout the world, irrespective of race, religion, political and social beliefs, cooperating with other bodies and organizations which further the development of education, human rights and peace. 

Key Qualities and Experience

The candidate should:

  • Have a strong understanding of the AMI/USA mission and strategic goals. 

  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the educational landscape in the United States and of the scope of work undertaken by AMI/USA. 

  • Be able to demonstrate commitment to education as a means for social change. 

  • Be aware of and sensitive to the cultural diversity of AMI/USA’s constituency.

Requirements

The candidate must:

  • Be an AMI Trainer.

  • Be an active AMI/USA School Consultant. 

  • Be a current member of AMI/USA at the time of appointment.

  • Possess excellent communication skills. 

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills. 

  • Have a good command of English.

  • Possess the ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines.

Term Of Appointment

Having successfully completed the interview process: 

  • The successful candidate will be recommended by the AMI/USA Consultation Committee and approved by the Executive Director of AMI/USA.

  • The appointment will be two 3-year terms with the possibility of a third 3-year term.

  • The position is a voluntary position, for which there will be no remuneration. 

Frequency of Consultation Committee Meetings

The Consultation Committee will meet twice a year. Monthly meetings will be conducted via conference calls or virtual calls as needed. An additional meeting will take place during lunch at the Consultant Session on the Friday before the annual Montessori Experience: Refresher Courses and More! and during the event as necessary. 

Responsibilities of Consultation Committee Members

  • To design and implement future Consultation Orientation Courses, the AMI/USA Executive Director will approve the courses, and the AMI/USA office will be responsible for any administrative duties related to these courses. 

  • To review and evaluate active AMI/USA School Consultants. 

  • To plan and participate in the Consultation Session. 

  • To advise the Director of Pedagogy in overseeing aspects of the consultation program, such as written reports, etc. 

  • To conduct periodic review and evaluation of Consultation Committee policies as needed. 

  • To devise any new policies that need to be put in place in connection with the consultation process.
