Carson Smith has spent her career exploring a simple but powerful question: What helps people do their best work? From the fashion and advertising industries to more than a decade in Montessori school administration, she observed the same pattern—people thrive when they feel seen, heard, and valued.
That insight, combined with her study of Dr. Donna Hicks' research-based dignity framework, inspired Carson to found The Dignity Way, an approach that helps school leaders and educators build cultures where trust, belonging, and human dignity can flourish. Today, she works with schools across the United States and internationally, supporting teams in creating healthier, more connected workplaces that strengthen both adult relationships and student outcomes.
Carson's work is currently the focus of a research partnership with Penn State University's Dignity Collaborative, examining the impact of The Dignity Way in school communities. She holds an Executive MBA in Strategic Leadership and is certified through the Whole School Leadership Institute. Her work is rooted in the belief that the quality of our relationships shapes the quality of our organizations—and ultimately, the experiences of the children they serve.

What makes a school community feel safe enough for people to be honest, connected, and fully themselves?
In this interactive, hour-long workshop, Carson Smith introduces The Dignity Way, a practical framework for understanding how trust and psychological safety are built—or quietly eroded—in the everyday interactions between colleagues. Open to school leaders and teachers alike, this session explores the essential elements of a dignity-centered culture and why treating one another with respect, while important, is not the same as creating a culture grounded in dignity.
Participants will examine how each person—regardless of title or role—contributes to the emotional climate of a school and influences whether others feel seen, valued, and safe to engage authentically. Through reflection, discussion, and practical examples, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the habits and mindsets that strengthen trust, foster belonging, and create healthier, more connected school communities.
The session includes a guided reflection activity, opportunities for small-group discussion, and time for audience Q&A.
