What does freedom truly mean for a young child? How do limits support, rather than restrict, healthy development? And how does a child’s ability to obey emerge over time? In this workshop, we will explore Montessori’s understanding of freedom, limits, and the development of the will during the first three years of life. Grounded in child development and Montessori principles, participants will examine how young children gradually build self-control, functional independence, and a positive sense of self through meaningful activity, consistent boundaries, and respectful adult guidance. Through practical examples and real-life scenarios, participants will gain concrete strategies for supporting children in everyday moments at home and in the Montessori environment.

There has been an explosion of Native/Indigenous authored picture books, middle grade and young adult books in the last decade touching on the lived experiences of Native peoples today. Children’s books are an equitable pathway toward understanding the truth about how the United States was colonized and how the displacement of Native Nations has turned into lived experiences for Native Nations today. Understanding the lived experiences of the over 574 federally recognized Native Nations is a step toward healing the persistent inequities that Native people, People of the Global Majority, people who are financially under resourced and Mother Earth continue to experience.
Young Native Children continue to experience the effects of colonization, and it is essential to be thoughtful about including Native authored literature in the curriculum for all children in developmentally appropriate ways. Using Native authored children’s books supports the continued reclamation by Native peoples of their languages, cultures, and Indigenous knowledge systems that Native, Non-Native children and planet earth will benefit from. This workshop will provide book lists, Native authored book recommendations, lessons, and materials to implement in one’s classroom.

This Zoom In will focus on the equivalence materials beyond the divided squares. We will be reviewing the other various polygons in our equivalence materials (triangles, rhombi, trapezoid, pentagon, decagon) as well as going over the materials for exploring the theorems of Pythagoras and Euclid. We’ll go over the general pattern of the work, discuss some specific points of interest for the various polygons, and explore the language used to clarify the discoveries. Young Learners, Big Questions is a practical, hands-on workshop designed for Children's House guides who want to ensure anti-bias and inclusion work are being addressed in the first plane of development.
Building on foundational concepts you may already know, this day focuses less on theory and more on what it looks like in the prepared environment: real scenarios, language you can use with children, and concrete ways to integrate anti-bias principles, grace, and courtesy into daily practice. Whether you're joining for the first time or returning for a refresher, you'll leave with immediately usable strategies, deeper self-reflection, and renewed clarity about how to respond when "rubber meets the road."

AMI’s revised First Timeline of Human Beings follows our species from roughly 300,000 to 40,000 years ago. Built from current research and designed as an impressionistic material (not a lecture), it shows early humans living in groups, meeting material and spiritual needs, refining tools and fire, and spreading from Africa. This workshop walks 6–12 teachers through the guidebook’s aims and sequence, the panoramic introductory story, sample vignette work, and practical habits for presenting the timeline. We also note how the Family Tree of Hominins Chart holds deeper time, and why the “empty” end of Timeline 1 opens the door to the Second Timeline.

Elementary learners bring adolescent topics, complex language, and big social questions into the classroom, and many guides feel unprepared to respond. This elementary-focused Foundations of Justice workshop is designed for educators in the second plane of development who may already know the "four goals" and core theory, and are now asking: "How do I make this come alive with fidelity in my classroom?"
Together, we will explore grace and courtesy and the Foundations of Justice through an ABAR lens, including how we talk about power, gender norms, and issues like guns and superheroes, so that our responses do more than "shut things down." Educators will receive practical strategies for storytelling, conflict resolution, and building inclusive classroom routines that help Generation Alpha elementary children name, notice, and care about fairness.
This day works well as a standalone elementary introduction or as a deeper-dive refresher for those who have engaged in anti-bias training before and are ready for more targeted, justice-centered classroom practice.

Elementary Workshop: Inclusion Confusion II
The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a tool that can provide a lot of support and answers, but it has its limitations. The children will return to the classroom after services. Services may be interrupted. The child may no longer respond positively to interventions. Then, there are the children who did not qualify. In this workshop session, Yolanda Wheelington will share tips and strategies on what to do when children qualify and still need help. We will also discuss what to do when children do not qualify and still need help. Equally important, we will review and discuss ways you can maintain self-care while keeping Montessori first.
